Photo shoot preparation checklist

Share this with your team to align on shots, people and practical arrangements.

  1. Purpose. List image uses and what the viewer should see. Separate required shots from optional ones.
  2. Shot list. Specify angles, details and formats for each subject. Use references to align style, not to promise a copy.
  3. Subjects. Check products, clothing and backgrounds. Prepare spare samples, steaming and necessary props.
  4. Location and people. Agree access, parking, light, power and participant times. Assign one on-set decision-maker.
  5. Test frame. Check light, composition and details before the main series; agree acceptable portrait retouching separately.
  6. Delivery. Record editing, file formats, timing, revisions and rights. Use a file checklist for acceptance.

Questions to align on before starting

  1. What are we photographing, and where will the images be used?
  2. Which shots, angles and visual references take priority?
  3. Where and when is the shoot; who prepares the subjects, participants and location?
  4. Which editing and file formats are needed; who agrees the scope, delivery date and revisions?

These questions help prepare a discussion; they are not a personalised audit or estimate. Scope, timing and cost are agreed after the brief.
