Internet marketing and SMM in Kazakhstan: choosing your channels
Do not guess between a website and Instagram: examine channel roles, the customer journey, languages, service geography and enquiry tracking.

“Do we need internet marketing, or is social media enough?” The question usually means something else: where can we find customers, and how should we use a limited budget? At SMM DRUG, we start with the buyer's journey rather than a list of platforms. How do people discover the offer, what do they check before enquiring, and who turns the conversation into an order? The answers help choose relevant channels without paying for work that does not yet address the business's needs.
Internet marketing is the wider system; SMM is part of it
Internet marketing brings together attracting people, explaining the offer, receiving enquiries and analysing sales across digital channels. It can include a website, search optimisation, advertising, maps, social media and work with the existing customer base. This is not a mandatory checklist for every company: the mix depends on demand, the product and the team's capacity.
Social media marketing, or SMM, covers a business's social presence: profile content, posts, communication and a clear route to an enquiry. Paid social can help deliver an offer to a selected audience, but requires separate planning and media spend. Good SMM can address a specific task on its own or alongside other channels. It does not replace all marketing, and that does not make it less valuable.
Choose channels around how people buy
Start with the last actual sale: what did the person search for, where did they come from, what did they compare and what did they ask? If a buyer can already express a need as a query, Google Search may be a point of discovery. If distance, directions or opening hours matter, check the information on maps. Social media has a distinct role when a product needs to be demonstrated, explained or brought back to people's attention regularly.
A website helps bring terms, the product range, evidence and ordering into one place. A social profile can show the product and team and address doubts. Paid advertising sends traffic to a chosen offer; it does not automatically fix an awkward form or unclear delivery terms. Roles can overlap: what matters is not losing the customer between them. Having an account, an advertising campaign or a website does not itself guarantee enquiries.
Three illustrative scenarios, not client case studies
A café beside a business centre. In this hypothetical scenario, a guest is choosing somewhere nearby for lunch. They need an address, a current menu, opening hours and a sense of the atmosphere. Maps help check the location; social media shows the food and life at the café. Before advertising, check that this information is easy to find and that guests can book a table if booking is offered.
Product delivery across several regions. In this hypothetical shop, a buyer compares specifications and asks whether an order can reach their city. A catalogue, delivery terms and stock information may matter more than joining more platforms. Search and advertising test demand for specific products; SMM demonstrates use, answers questions and supports trust.
A B2B company with a sales team. A hypothetical procurement buyer needs specifications, documents and the scope of a quotation. A website helps prepare a focused request, search meets existing demand, and social media shows expertise and the team's work. Sales owns the next stage: clarify the need, prepare a proposal and keep the communication history. These are discussion models, not promises of results.
Kazakhstan: language and geography are not checkboxes
Choose Kazakh and Russian around the audience and buying situation, not simply by putting identical text in two columns. Look at how people ask about the product, which language they use when enquiring and which language the team can fully support. Sometimes the same offer needs a different presentation: different examples, explanations in a different order and differently phrased questions, while factual terms remain the same.
Service coverage is not the same as physical presence. If you deliver across Kazakhstan from Almaty, say where orders leave from, where you deliver and which terms need confirmation. Do not describe a city as a regional office when there is no team or reception point there. The advertisement, page and manager's answer should describe the same available service.
Budget: close the gap before widening reach
Do not split a small budget equally across five channels just to be present everywhere. First find the break in the journey: an ad promises one thing but the page shows another; delivery charges are unclear; the manager does not receive form submissions; messages go unanswered. More clicks do not remove those causes.
Choose a testable hypothesis and an owner for each stage. Separate material production, channel management, advertising spend and enquiry handling in the estimate. Put the offer, the next step and tracking in order first. Then test the selected source of demand and expand from evidence, without expecting one test to answer for the whole business.
What to measure without mistaking activity for sales
A WhatsApp click means a button was pressed, not that a message was sent. A started conversation confirms contact, but not yet a relevant need. An enquiry becomes qualified against criteria agreed in advance: the right product, a served region and suitable terms. Record payment separately using accounting records, rather than inferring it from reach, followers or message counts.
Connect platform and website statistics to a spreadsheet or CRM: source, enquiry, status, reason for loss and payment. Flag repeat contacts and unknown sources. A person may see a post, later search for the brand and then message you: the final visit does not always explain the whole sale. In reviews, identify where suitable customers are lost and decide what needs changing: the channel, materials, terms or handling.
- SMM is part of internet marketing; its role follows the buyer's journey, not a mandatory platform checklist.
- Language, geography, page content and the manager's answer should match the actual service terms.
- Close the gap between interest and ordering before adding channels.
- Count clicks, conversations, qualified enquiries and payments separately.
